The phone slipped from Lucian’s hand and hit the floor.
It was as if he had been struck by lightning. His mind went blank for a brief moment, followed by an
overwhelming surge of fear and disbelief.
How could this happen?
That single thought looped in his head, a broken record.
The doctors had told him clearly that as long as she was properly cared for, she could live for decades without any problem.
As long as everything was handled carefully, her life would not be in danger.
As long as she was alive–Catherine would remain the compliant Mrs. Sterling.
He scrambled to pick up the phone, about to call me, only to realize his vision was blurred by something.
Tears fell one after another, and he suddenly broke down crying.

Jessica’s voice sounded beside him.
She was there in an instant, her arms wrapping around him.
“Lucian, ” she breathed, her voice tight with alarm. “What is it? What’s wrong p>
She kept calling his name, but it took him a long while before he seemed to react.
When I first discovered his affair, I had broken down too.
Just like any ordinary woman, I cried as I smashed everything in the house.
The relentless, shattered questions. “Why, Lucian? Why are you doing this to me? Why p>
Back then, Lucian only thought I was insane, a hysterical madwoman. He had no patience to comfort me.
He was already immersed in another woman’s tenderness and still had to come back to deal with me.
He walked up coldly, grabbed my chin, and forced me to look at him.
Then he told me, word by word.

The realization hit him like a physical blow.
I have always been very particular, both emotionally and physically. That has never changed.
He shoved Jessica away hard. As usual, he threw a platinum card at her and warned her coldly.
“Don’t contact me again. I don’t want my wife upset p>
He left without a backward glance, Jessica’s devastated sobs echoing behind him as he bolted for the
hospital.
He had never felt the road to be so long or so difficult.
He hadn’t even stepped into the morgue yet, and already it felt as if the air around him was being stripped
away, bit by bit.
Then he saw the familiar figure inside.
