Ethan stared at me like I’d just slapped him.

“When did I ever agree to that p>
“Wait–how could you even file without my signature p>
Of course, he’d forgotten about the divorce agreement we’d both signed years ago.
I shook my head, voice like ice.
“Isn’t that exactly what you wanted p>
“Now you can be with Zoey out in the open p>
Zoey’s face lit up at that. She immediately latched onto his arm, eyes sparkling.
“She’s right, Ethan! Didn’t you say you were sick of her ages ago? Now you’re finally free p>
“Come on–let’s get married today, hit City Hall, throw a party tomorrow. What do you think p>
But Ethan’s brows only furrowed deeper. Instead of going along with her, he pulled his hand away, face hardening.
“I told you this has nothing to do with you. I was just helping out. Don’t get cocky and make my wife misunderstand p>
Then he turned to me, softening his tone.
“Did she say something to mess with your head p>
“She’s just a kid who talks too much–don’t take her seriously p>
“I swear on my life–there’s nothing going on between us p>
He scanned my face, hoping for a flicker of emotion. When I gave him nothing, he sighed, bent down, picked up the divorce decree from the floor–and tossed it straight into the trash.
“Alright. Enough of this. Don’t joke about stuff like that again. I’ll let it go this time p>
“Come on. Let’s go home p>
He reached for my hand.
I slapped it away without hesitation.
Even now, he thought I was throwing a tantrum. Acting out for attention. As if I were still that woman who used to bite her tongue and let him walk all over her.

I met his eyes, steady and unflinching.
“I’m serious. The divorce paperwork’s already filed–feel free to check with the court p>
Then I turned away and looked to my team instead.
“Guys, it’s been half an hour–decided what we’re eating p>
Seeing I was in good spirits, unaffected by Ethan’s meltdown, they visibly relaxed.
“Seafood!” someone grinned. “Time to make the boss bleed a little p>
“Yeah, let’s see that credit card cry p>
I ignored Ethan’s darkening expression and led my crew into the restaurant. They burst into laughter and noise, quickly ordering up a feast. They teased about running up the bill, but I noticed how they skipped the priciest items.
My heart softened.
They were all talk–tough on the outside, soft inside. Being with them was easy. Comfortable.
Honest.
So different from Ethan’s polished lies and cold heart.
What good were sweet words, anyway?
If someone truly loved you, you’d see it in what they did, not what they said.
Talking was cheap–real love showed up in actions.
The dishes clattered onto the table. We were loud, messy, and alive.
And Ethan?
He still hadn’t left.
Thick–skinned as ever,
he followed us inside.
