Chapter 118
–Elara–
The call dropped abruptly.
I looked at the phone in my hand, wondering what just happened.
Lucien was mad, furious.
He had never been mad at me since I had known him, and we had got married.
But something I said about Theo really got to him, and he wasn’t having it.

He didnt even give me a chance to clarify things, and now he doesn’t want me to contact him anymore.
I couldn’t tell exactly whether he was just angry about me asking him not to speak badly about Theo, or if there was something else.
For some reason, my heart sank.
I had gotten so used to having him around that the thought of not hearing from him for a long time was breaking my heart.
However, he made his choice, and I’ll make mine. Let’s see who gets tired and misses the other first.
Besides, I have to take care of Kaia before they leave for the Nightshade pack. Otherwise, I will fit in with Nightshade.
I need to stop them from getting married. The Red Moon is only four weeks away, and they’d be leaving for the Nightshade pack in two days.
I can’t waste any more time.
Since Lucien wasn’t here, I had to stay grounded and keeping him out of my way would help.
I heard a soft knock, and a maid walked in; it was my attendant.
“Ma’am, Queen Cara is asking you to join her at the table”, Leticia, my attendant, informed me.
I scowled, wondering why she was asking for me all of a sudden.
I looked up at Leticia.
“Tell her, I will be there soon” Leticia bowed and left.
I stood up, applied a little powder to my face, put on my lip gloss, and then stepped out to see Cara.
When I got there, she was alone at the dining table, eating.

“Hello, Cara,” I greeted. “You are eating alone p>
Cara turned to me, smiled and stopped eating.

“What else can I do?” Cara muttered, picking up her glass of orange juice. “Kingsley is busy with his son, and my poor son was forced to live in some abandoned town in Seeland. Im all alone by myself, so I thought I should eat something”
“I see,” I mouthed.
“You haven’t come to see me since Lucien left for Seeland, thought we should have a chat”, Cara said, and I nodded, agreeing I had kept my distance from her. It wasn’t intentional, but it did happen.
“I’m sorry, Cara”, I apologised. “Things got so intense since Lucien and I got married, that I hadn’t had a chance to sit down and talk”
Cara nodded, assuring me she understood where I was coming from.
“I get where you are coming from, Elara”, she said, and I smiled. “I felt the same way when I got married to Kingsley. I had to do everything by myself,” she paused and looked at me. I saw pain in her eyes. “I was an orphan; I had no family left. When I found out Kingsley was my mate, I took the opportunity to lift myself and my son out of our misery”
I could see hurt and pain in her eyes, and I wanted to pry in.
I hadn’t really spoken to her about her past and family. This came as a shock to me.
“What happened?” I asked before I could stop myself.
Cara smiled bitterly.
“You know when I turned eighteen,” she began. “I had to leave the orphanage that I had come to know as my home. I wasn’t sad because everyone had to leave at some point; I was grateful they let me stay until I was eighteen, which wasn’t generally allowed.
Once I left, I was lucky enough to find my mate just a few days later. I was overjoyed that I wouldn’t live my life alone in an unfamiliar place.
Bernard and I were madly in love, assisted by the mate bond; we couldn’t stay away from each other.
He was the son of the delta of the pack I used to live in, and it turned out his father was abusive to him and his mother.
That same year, we found out I was pregnant with our son, Lucien.
I can’t tell you how happy this made us. Our family was finally completed, and we would love each other until
the end.
When I thought my life was moving in the right direction, that my mate and I would live a happy and contented life, he suddenly became cold and distant.

He would return home drunk and pass out; he wouldn’t say a word to me when I questioned him.
I felt alone in that moment. I thought my life was over. Maybe it was for years until I met Kingsley.
When our son was born, he became happy again. He showered us with his love and attention.
The following year, he took over as Delta when his father stepped down.
From my understanding, there was a cold war between my ex-husband and his father because of what he did to him and his mother growing up. His mother died as a result of the abuse, she wasn’t his fated. They had a thing and she got pregnant and he was forced to marry her.
Whenever Bernard came across his father, he would have a panic attack. The doctor said it was because of trauma, something his father inflicted on him.
I was worried, so I begged his father to stay away from our little family. Even though the older man was adamant about being in his son’s and grandson’s lives, I stopped him so that my husband could remain stable.
He agreed and stayed away for a long time.
When Lucien was nine, he came back, and Bernard never remained the same.
He kept getting drunk and neglecting us. Then, for the first time since we got together, he hit me p>
I flinched when I heard this. I looked at Cara, who had tears welling up in her eyes, but she held them back.
She smiled at me, obviously not reaching her eyes.
I couldn’t imagine what she had gone through to get here.
