Lucian stayed quiet. It was Jessica who broke the silence, slamming her glass down in a fit of pique.
“So, you still have feelings for Catherine after all p>
“You still like that old woman p>
“If you like her so much, then why are you with me at all p>
She turned and started to leave.
Finally, Lucian stood. In one smooth motion, he pulled her back, settling her onto his lap before answering
with a smile.
“Why would I like her p>
He explained casually. “Catherine never really stepped out. The men she dated outside were nothing more than tools she used to provoke me p>
“I know her better than she knows herself. The woman has a line she won’t cross p>
“If she really crossed that line, she wouldn’t be Catherine anymore p>
Laughter broke out inside the private room.
Jessica still didn’t believe him. “So you think just saying it makes it true p>
“Do you have proof? Like, actual footage? You’re no angel yourself p>
Her voice was soft and petulant, deliberately cute. It amused Lucian enough that he placed his phone on the table. “See for yourself p>
On Lucian’s phone were all my chat records with those boyfriends.
Every message. Every video from each date. Not a single second missing.
Everything was neatly saved in a folder on his phone.
Lucian’s voice was calm, so calm it made my entire body feel cold.
“Women. All that jealousy nonsense is tedious. If Catherine wanted to play her little games, I provided the playmates p>
“Sure, at first she was genuinely looking for someone who ‘got‘ her, who understood her struggles. But the second anyone made a real move p>

Lucian opened one of the videos.
It was my third boyfriend, leaning in to kiss me. I pushed him away, my face full of apology.
“I’m sorry. I still can’t do it p>
Then I told him, “Let’s break up p>
Lucian pointed at the screen.
“That’s Catherine. Traditional to the core. A slave to her own morals p>
“She can’t do that kind of thing. She was only trying to make me angry p>
He opened another chat window. It was one of the men I dated, the seventh one, reporting to him.
[Mr. Sterling, just as you predicted, all it took was a suggestion of getting a room for Mrs. Sterling to find me repulsive, to decide I was only after one thing. She broke up with me on the spot p>
[Mr. Sterling, should I persist p>
I remembered that man.
We shared the same interests. We liked painting, art, and even childish animation.
But after a month and a half together, he suggested getting a room.
When his hand landed on my shoulder and started to slip inward, my body reacted before my mind did. I vomited on the spot and broke up with him.
That night, I stumbled back into Sterling Mansion, a wreck.
Lucian was sitting in the living room, waiting for me.
The half–smiling look he gave me seemed to take in every ounce of my humiliation.
I felt ashamed, yet I hated myself even more for still being unable to cross that line. I broke down and cried.
Lucian suddenly pulled me into his arms.
“Catherine, had enough of your little game yet p>
A scent that didn’t belong to me lingered around my nose.
When I looked up, I saw the red marks on his neck and the lipstick stain on his collar. A violent wave of nausea surged up, and I vomited all over him.

“Catherine, how much longer will you keep up this pathetic performance p>
“Yes, I cheated. But haven’t I given you everything? You went from being a nobody from some backwater
town to Mrs. Sterling overnight p>
“Who doesn’t envy you? Who doesn’t say you hit the jackpot? What more could you possibly want p>
I looked at Lucian, standing above me.
I had never seen him look so utterly alien. So alien that the words finally tore free from my throat. “Lucian.
Let’s get a divorce p>
I cried until I collapsed, calling out to him. “Lucian, please, just stop p>
